The city of Pompeii presents itself today as an important touristic centre, visited every year by millions of visitors that are attracted by its ancient and recent history.
Pompeii is found at the exact centre of two provinces: the Vesuvian Towns that extend as far as the stupendous Sorrento Coast and on the other side, the infamous towns of the Amalfi Coast.
Other than the Pompeii excavations, the principal attraction of the city is the Santuario della Vergine del Rosario (Shrine of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Rosary), one of the major Marian devotion centres in Italy.
Constructed in diverse times, the Santuario, today Basilica Pontificia was expanded in 1930, from one to three naves with the intention of welcoming yet more faithful followers.
It is estimated that approximately 4 million pilgrims come to Pompeii to visit the Santuario della Madonna del Rosario.
The Santuario, as predicted by its founder, Blessed Bartolo Longo has been already visited by Pope John Paul II (2 times) and by Pope Benedict XVI.
The Santuario presents itself as a Latin cross with three naves, within which you can admire paintings of incredible workmanship, marble of various colours, biblical frescoes and precious ornaments.
In the Church, there is also a museum which displays honours and other gifts of the faithful from all over the world, a large library, a confessional, an offering room and the office of the pilgrimage.
The Basilica is open:
On weekdays from 6.15 to 19.30.
On weekends from 5.45 to 20.30.
The city of Pompeii was founded approximately 2700 years ago, by the people of Osci.
